Parvovirus B19

It is the commonest type of the family of Parvoviruses, now classified as an erythrovirus. In case of primary infection during the first five months of pregnancy, the virus may infect the fetus via the placenta and cause serious pregnancy complications.

A special polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is applied, detecting the presence of viral DNA.

SPECIMEN:Serum or amniotic fluid sample.
