Toxoplasma gondii

Toxoplasma gondii is a parasitic protozoon, the main transmission sources of which are usually inadequately cooked meat (mainly pork), animals (cats and dogs) as well as soil contaminated with excretions of these animals. In case of primary infection during pregnancy and if the mother has not developed antibodies prior to the infection, there is a risk (30-40%) for the fetus to be affected.

A special polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is applied, detecting the presence of the DNA of the parasite.
