Varicella zoster virus (VSV)

Chickenpox is a particularly contagious disease, caused by infection of the organism with the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV). It usually concerns children, where symptoms are relatively mild, while in adults symptoms may be more severe. An infection of a mother with this virus during pregnancy (up to the 28th week) may cause congenital abnormalities to the fetus while it may also lead to premature birth.

A special polymerase chain reaction (PCR) is applied, detecting the presence of viral DNA.
